AI Brain

by Dr. Wightman

Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer just science fiction—it’s here in classrooms, and it’s reshaping how students learn every day. From tools that help with writing to apps that give instant feedback, AI is becoming part of the way students study, practice, and show what they know.

The upside:

Used well, AI can be like a personal tutor. Studies show that AI-powered feedback can boost student mastery and keep kids engaged—sometimes almost as much as having a one-on-one tutor (Baily & Warner, 2025). Teachers are also using AI to handle routine tasks, which frees them to spend more time on what matters most: connecting with students (Associated Press, 2025). AI can even open doors for students with learning differences by offering accessibility supports and translation tools (OECD, 2024).

What learning looks like now:🌐

Teachers are adjusting by focusing not just on the final product but also on the process. That means asking students to show drafts, explain their thinking out loud, or defend their answers. Some teachers also design assignments that require personal reflection or hands-on problem solving—things AI can’t easily fake. When used the right way, AI becomes a tool to support learning rather than replace it (UNESCO, 2025).

How families can help:🤗

  • Ask about class rules. Each teacher may have slightly different expectations for AI use.

  • Talk about process. Encourage your child to show their drafts and explain how they used AI, if at all.

  • Double-check information. Remind students that AI isn’t always right—verifying facts is part of learning.

  • Keep the focus on effort. AI should support your child’s work, not replace it.

AI in schools is still new, and educators everywhere are working to find the right balance. The goal is not to shut out technology but to guide students in using it responsibly, so they’re prepared for the future while still building the core skills that matter most.
